about

This is a song by songwriter David Olney who lives in Nashville. I first heard David perform this song when we shared a gig at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH back in the early '90's. I was struck when I heard it, then I heard him recently perform the song last year. He gave me the permission to record it, and it is an honor. The song is about the life and art of Vincent Van Gogh.

lyrics

Vincent’s Blues
~ David Olney

It’s a deep, deep feeling.
You can feel time ticking by.
There’s a child on a train,
waving to his mama goodbye.
He’s going to see the world,
before the world passes by.

Well, the stars are shining bright,
with a light that never ends.
Every man’s a stranger,
every stranger is a friend.
Vincent knows the feeling,
he's been talking to the wind.

I walked all night in the rain,
there was nothing else to do.
All night in the rain,
I wore out these walking shoes.
But I never seen a thing,
till I seen Vincent with the blues.

There’s a wind across the wheat field.
You can see the sparrow fly.
The flowers in the vase,
are enough to make you cry.
How did Vincent get that blue,
he stole it from the sky.

Break

You can moan about Monet,
get silly ‘bout Cezanne.
You can rave about Renoir,
go crazy ‘bout Gaugin.
But if you want to see the blues,
Ah, well Vincent he’s your man.

It’s a deep, deep feeling.
You can feel time ticking by.
There’s a child on a train,
waving to his mama goodbye.
He’s going to see the world,
before the world passes by.
